Workshops

  • Home Tweet Home; Welcoming Backyard Birds to Your Homestead

    • 10:30-11am

    • Teacher: Beth Clark, Stormshire Homestead

    • Backyard bird feeding is a lot like hosting a dinner party—you need the right menu, the perfect setting, and a little hospitality to keep your feathered guests coming back for more! In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore the best foods to offer, the types of birds they attract, and how to create a welcoming habitat on your homestead. From the “lasagna” of the bird world to the special treats that make your buffet complete, you’ll learn how to turn your yard into a bird-friendly haven.

  • All About Chickens; A Young Homesteaders Workshop

    • 11-11:30am

    • Teachers: Edwin and Julie Barton and Family

    • This workshop, designed for children under 12, will be an engaging and hands-on opportunity for young homesteaders to learn:

      - Chicken Life Cycle

      - Chicken Anatomy

      - Purpose of Chickens and Breeds

      - Hands on Egg Dissection

      All Children will receive a handout and stickers!

  • Irrigation for Your Garden

    • 1-1:30pm

    • Teacher: Woody Wilson, Wilson Home Farms

    • Water is a huge factor in the success of a garden; too little and plants will not germinate or thrive, too much and seed rot and diseases take advantage. This workshop will focus on common irrigation techniques, their advantages, and pitfalls.

  • Making Wool Dryer Balls

    • 1:30-2pm

    • Teacher: Ali Hebert, Hebert’s Hen House

    • This workshop includes demonstration and education on the benefits, FAQ, and construction of 100% wool dryer balls. This will include opportunities for participants to try the wrapping/needle poking technique. Wool will be shown in multiple stages, so it is easy to see the transformation from raw wool to completed dryer balls.

  • Becoming a Furgal, Sustainable Homestead

    • 2-2:30pm

    • Teachers: Amanda and Brian Becker, Becker Homestead

    • This will be a discussion style workshop on how to become a more frugal, sustainable homestead. Discussion will be encouraged by attendees so that they can ask specific questions. Topics will include seasonal meal planning, seed saving, homemade convenience foods, easy container gardens and anything else that makes a home more frugal and sustainable.

  • Movable Fencing Solutions

    • 2:30-3pm

    • Teacher: Greg Stuber, Pole Cat Hollow Farm

    • Whether you have a small property or hundreds of acres, rotating animals across available pasture increases forage productivity, improves soil health, and improves animal health.   You will learn about which type of fence and fencers can be used to best manage your animals.

  • All About Goats; A Young Homesteaders Workshop

    • 3-3:30pm

    • Teachers: Edwin and Julie Barton and Family

    • This workshop, designed for children under 12, will be an engaging and hands-on opportunity for young homesteaders to learn:

      - Purposes of Goats on the Homestead

      - All About Milking Goats

      - Basic Goat Care & Grooming

      - Hands on time with Goats

      All Children will receive a handout and stickers!

  • Seed Saving in a Busy World

    • 3:30-4pm

    • Teacher: Stacey Hoffman, 1st Time Farm

    • Join this workshop to learn basic and introductory seed saving techniques to ensure a lifetime of food security, fun, and community.

  • Introduction to Beekeeping

    • 4:30-5:30pm

    • Teacher: Joshua Konwinski, Blue Spruce Bee Company

    • Learn the essentials needed to begin your journey in beekeeping, see beekeeping equipment and tools, and learn about safety and basic hive management from an experienced beekeeper.
